Unregulated incineration of waste biomass is a serious environmental problem in India and leads to daily average PM levels of upwards of 500 µg/m3 (the WHO safe limit is 25 µg/m3) in certain regions. Gasification is one option to extract value from the biomass, but most of the biomass is high ash, causing clinker formation and eventual shutdown of conventional gasifiers. The storage and transportation of the produced syngas add to the economic penalty of using biomass.
We propose an integrated gasification and syngas-combustion system to gasify waste biomass while simultaneously using a fuel flexible burner to burn variable composition, low-calorific value synthesis gases sourced from these heterogeneous biomass feedstocks.
