How we work

Training & Support

The Tata Center for Technology and Design trains and supports MIT researchers working to solve challenges facing communities in India and the developing world.

Our work spans six overlapping areas:

Tata Center projects go beyond the lab and seek real-world impact, guided by the core principles of relevance, practicality, and sensitivity to context.

Working with collaborators throughout India, and with our sister-center at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, the Tata Center seeks solutions designed to serve human needs.

Seek

Technological solutions that can improve millions of lives by having a large-scale impact
The Tata Center seeks projects that will apply technology and systems innovations to challenges in India and the developing world, with the goal of having a significant positive impact on quality-of-life and sustainable development.

Collaborate

Closely with governments, companies, NGOs, and universities
The Tata Center is proud to count some of India’s leading organizations in a variety of fields among its collaborators and supporters, working toward common goals, sharing expertise, resources, and vision.

Provide

Multi-year funding on a competitive basis for lab, field, and policy research
While the call is open to any field, the Tata Center encourages research in the areas of agriculture, energy, environment, health, housing, and water. Projects are usually funded for two years, with the possibility of either an extension or renewal. The call is open to MIT Principal Investigators only.
Request for RFPs for 2019-2020 to be decided.

Train

Graduate students to mold their solutions to fit market needs
Beginning with their Tata Fellowships, and in many cases continuing long after, Tata Center students create products, influence policy, and launch businesses, all without losing sight of the main goal: improving quality of life for billions of people in the developing world.
