In response to the high demand for sustainable, affordable housing in India, this project seeks to innovate a new solution for structural components, a primary contributor to the cost of residential building construction.
Structural components, such as long-span beams and floor systems, are repeated and standardized across millions of buildings, thus offering potential for huge savings in cost and environmental impact if they can be designed to reduce material consumption. With newly developed computational tools for structural optimization and digital fabrication technologies for precast concrete molding, such savings are now possible in unprecedented ways that will be explored by this project.
