There is a large prevalence of undiagnosed and untreated chronic and acute diseases in rural India. To address the need for low-cost diagnostics in communities that lack trained medical personnel, we are creating the next generation of mobile health devices that will use machine intelligence and advanced algorithms that go beyond simple data collection to provide valuable diagnostic and clinical decision support for the field doctor or health worker.
This work includes advanced signal processing, blind source separation algorithms, machine learning, and probabilistic inference models that are efficient and can run in real-time on a mobile phone or tablet. Our group is applying these methods to several clinical projects across India, primarily focusing on pulmonary disease diagnosis with our clinical partner, the Chest Research Foundation in the city of Pune.
