Microgrids have been identified by India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) as a promising technology to mitigate the lack of universal access to electricity in India. The MNRE has set a goal of establishing 10,000 renewable energy-based microgrids with an aggregate capacity of 500 MW.

This project aims to address the technological obstacles facing such a significant expansion of microgrid use by exploring new control and design architectures that would allow for stable plug-and-play interconnection of loads and sources. The proposed architectures aim to reduce the need for expert supervision in planning, deployment and operation processes, and provide a pathway for rapid proliferation of affordable electricity.
